This course provides UW Medicine residents and fellows with efficient, high-quality training in quality improvement and patient safety. Upon completion, trainees will be able to apply foundational QI tools, contribute to patient safety efforts, participate in error disclosure programs, and activate UW Medicine specific resources to address quality and safety problems. It satisfies Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) common program requirements for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety training. The course enhances preparedness for CLER reviews through a shared educational foundation.
Who is eligible?
Any UW Medicine training program may enroll. Once enrolled, the training program may send any of their UW Medicine residents or fellows with no capacity limits.
At least one faculty member from each participating training program must participate as a co-learner and facilitator.
What does the Graduate Medical Education Quality and Safety Foundations Course include?
The course consists of two 5-hour workshops, one covering core concepts in quality improvement and one teaching core concepts in patient safety. These workshops build upon existing UW Medicine Learning Hub modules on safety, wellness, and communication.
Faculty members from participating programs attend one 1-hour workshop preparing them to serve as facilitators during breakout sessions in the workshops.
Each workshop will be offered twice a year. Each trainee need only attend one QI workshop and one patient safety workshop for a total time commitment of 10 hours. The faculty participant will attend one of each of these workshops plus the faculty preparation workshop for a total of 11 hours.
Workshops will be held in-person at UWMC Montlake with both in-person and live virtual options.

What is the cost?
The cost for small training programs with less than 5 participating residents or fellows is $750/year. The cost for larger programs with 5 or more participating residents or fellows is $1,500/year. Please note these are the costs when paying with a UW budget number.
