Overview
The Graduate Medical Education (GME) Quality & Safety Foundations Course provides residents and fellows with efficient, high-quality training in quality improvement and patient safety. Participation satisfies Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) common program requirements for quality improvement and patient safety training. The course enhances preparedness for CLER reviews through a shared educational foundation.
Key Details
- WHO: Designed for training programs in the greater Puget Sound area and their complete roster of residents and fellows.
- WHAT: Two 5-hour in-person workshops (no virtual option), one covering core concepts in quality improvement and one teaching core concepts in patient safety.
- WHERE: UWMC Montlake South Campus Center and Seattle Children's Hospital Sand Point Learning Center
- COST: Pricing is for UW programs. We welcome training programs external to UW- please contact us to discuss logistics and pricing.
- $250/year for small training programs (6 or fewer residents or fellows total in the training program);
- $500/year for medium training programs (7-12 residents or fellows total in the training program);
- $1,000/year for large training programs (13 or more residents or fellows total in the training program).
Workshops are held multiple times during the academic year and delivered in-person. Each trainee need only attend one Quality Improvement Workshop and one Patient Safety Workshop to complete the curriculum.

Learning objectives and Curriculum
Upon completion, trainees will be able to:
- Apply foundational quality improvement tools
- Contribute to patient safety efforts
- Participate in error disclosure programs
- Activate UW Medicine specific resources to address quality and safety problems
The two workshops build upon existing UW Medicine Learning Hub modules on safety, wellness, and communication.

Eligibility
Any training program in the greater Puget Sound area may enroll and send any of their residents or fellows with no capacity limits.
At least one faculty member from each participating training program must participate as a co-learner and facilitator at any Quality Improvement Workshops attended by their trainees.
Requirements
Each trainee must attend one Quality Improvement Workshop and one Patient Safety Workshop for a total time commitment of 10 hours to complete the curriculum.
A faculty member is required to attend any Quality Improvement Workshops attended by their trainees. Before attending the Quality Improvement Workshop, faculty members must attend a one hour virtual training, preparing them to serve as a facilitator during breakout sessions.
Cost (2024-2025)
Costs are based on the size of training program, not how many trainees the program plans to send to the workshops. Pricing is for UW programs. We welcome training programs external to UW- please contact us to discuss logistics and pricing
