QI Mentoring

Those enrolled in the QI Project Accelerator recieve one-on-one QI project mentoring. This is what that mentoring entails:

The purpose of a QI mentor is to provide support & guidance for professionals working on QI projects, augmenting the support they receive from supervisors, coaches, and other mentors, with an emphasis on:

  • Providing practical, strategic, operationally focused, project-specific advice and guidance
  • Developing generalizable QI & leadership skills and applying them to current & future projects
  • Assisting – in collaboration with others – to generate scholarly output from such projects
  • Promoting networking to build mentees’ influence, reputation, and advance their careers

If I think QI mentoring might be helpful, how would it work?

An initial meet-and-greet will be conducted with each potential mentee to review the following offerings. If the mentee choses to proceed, they can expect:

  • Meetings with the QI mentor at regular intervals (frequency based on project needs), with additional ad hoc meetings as needed.
  • Help with all aspects of QI work, including: aligning ideas with the organization’s mission, values, and operational priorities; understanding & communicating about QI problems; strategically selecting change ideas; developing & testing interventions; actively managing implementation; assessing the impact of their interventions; and learning from and sharing their work both within and beyond UW.
  • Suggestions about ways to incorporate the values of humility, respect, equity, diversity, and inclusion throughout their QI work.
  • The options to:
    • Receive feedback on project related materials, presentations, and scholarly products from the QI mentor prior to using/presenting/submitting such materials.
    • Be observed by the QI mentor while they lead a meeting or give a presentation, followed by debriefing and feedback about their leadership, meeting management, and presentation skills.
  • Connections to operational leaders, organizational resources, and key content experts both within & beyond UW, to help promote & move their work forward.
  • Possible Center-based group project mentoring sessions (depending on interest), with presentations by mentees followed by feedback from other mentees and QI faculty, to provide mentees with a broader range of feedback and indirect mentoring, networking, and to build a community of practice.
